Transport yourself to a world where dragons of all shapes, sizes, and colors soar through the skies. Take on the role of an amateur dragonologist, exploring caves and transforming them into sanctuaries for these majestic creatures. But remember, creating the perfect spot may not be enough—you also need to lure the dragons into staying!
In On Dragons' Wings, you build your own draconid reserve. You start with three excavated tiles—one in each of the caves: the Scarlet Cavern, the Golden Cave, and the Amethyst Abyss. As the game progresses, you'll excavate additional tiles, luring dragons to your reserve, activating powerful abilities, and currying favor with the Dragon Guild.
What does it involve?
The game is played over four rounds. In each round, players play several turns in clockwise order.
During a turn, we choose one of the actions available on our reserve board, move our dragonologist there, pay the appropriate cost, and then perform the action.
We can choose between digging, which allows us to play cards into caves, luring, which allows us to play dragon cards onto the board, and exploring the Scarlet Cavern, which allows us to activate selected abilities.
The different types of dragons we can lure to the reserve have different resource requirements and preferred lairs, granting different numbers of victory points and various effects. The key to victory is creating the best possible combinations from available cards and using them at the right moment.
We play our turns until we pass. This usually happens when someone uses all their coins or has no dragon cards in their hand they want (or can) play. When all players have passed, the round ends.
After the fourth round, players tally up their points from dragon cards, end-of-game abilities, saved eggs, resources, and more. The player with the most points wins.
Why will you love this game?
- The game is based on the core mechanics of Elizabeth Hargrave's On the Wings, but is more complex, with every aspect of the game redesigned around the theme of dragons!
- The multitude of available components makes individual games incredibly diverse and allows for many new strategies to be tested. Meanwhile, changes to resource acquisition, the addition of new cards, and the Dragon Guild mechanics make the game challenging even for veterans of On the Wings.
- The game features special rules for solo play, where players compete against an artificial opponent, the Automa. The rulebook also includes a solo variant, Tangled.
